“Marriage is a bout in which a loss is victory,” the ‘just-married’ Vijender said as he stepped out of the “family affair” to pose for the media with his wife. The middleweight boxer tied the nuptial knot in a small ceremony at the New Delhi’s Flying Club on Tuesday. Though cameras continued to click and roll, not many celebrities graced the occasion.
AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi was among those who attended. Others included president of the Indian Boxing Federation Abhay Chautala, Bharatiya Janta Party spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain, Congress leader Captain (retd) Satish Sharma, owner of Perfect Relations public relations company Dilip Cherian and celebrity management company Percept’s CEO Shailendra Singh.
I am not here in the capacity of the president of Boxing Federation, I am here because I know Vijender personally. He had invited me, but even if he hadn’t, I would have definitely come as he is one of the ablest boxers in the country,” Chautala said before leaving.
Vijender’s friends from the boxing fraternity included Jai Bhagwan, Dinesh Kumar and Ram Singh.
One of them said: “Vijender didn’t want to garner unwanted attention, so he kept the marriage ceremony as simple as possible. Today, there are only 35-40 guests in the marriage.”
The wedding, which started at 10 am and culminated at 3 pm, saw the boxer and the guests leave for Vijender’s ancestral village in Kaluwas, near Bhiwani, where a lavish reception is scheduled to be held on Wednesday
Vijender ‘knocked out’
The boxer’s met his match — and he’s loving it.
Olympic bronze medallist boxer Vijender Singh, who hails from a small Bhiwani village in Haryana, tied the knot with Delhi girl Archana Singh in a small and private ceremony on Tuesday afternoon.
Even though the media wasn’t allowed inside the venue, a bevy of shutterbugs and reporters thronged the gates of the Safdarjung Flying Club for a glimpse of Vijender’s family, friends and a few high-profile guests who came to congratulate the couple.
After a simple wedding ceremony Vijender Singh and his newly wed wife Archana came outside and posed for the media. Vijender looked dapper in an off-white sherwani designed by Manav Gangwani.
The designer, who attended the wedding, told us, “The decorations inside are grand and beautiful. I came here specially to congratulate Vijender and his bride. They both looked very nice together.” BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla also turned up and congratulated the couple, “I wish all the best to the couple and hope they have a happy married life.”
The wedding was attended by other prominent names like Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who gave a blink-and-you-miss-it appearance. Former Union Minister Captain Satish Sharma with wife Sterre (the couple came in a bright magenta car called ‘Pinki’) and BJP leader Syed Shahnawaz Hussain were also spotted at the wedding.
Vijender’s good friend and boxer Akhil Kumar, who missed the wedding, spoke to us from Patiala and told us that due to flight delay he couldn’t reach Delhi on time.
He said, “I will be going to Bhiwani to attend Vijender’s reception and congratulate him for marrying the love of his life.”
Vijender Kumar is into next round of Olympics boxing competition and can even win Gold medal if his winning streak continues. Here is bonus, if Vijender Kumar wins a gold medal - Bipasha is ready for a golden date.
During ‘AajTak’ TV interview, Bipasha was told that Vijender Kumar is her very big fan and Bipasha sprayed the golden offer by saying:
“… I have heard that he is a great fan of mine and I promise that I will go out on a date with him if he brings gold for India.” Hey Vijender get the gold.. Bips is waiting!
